Otis Orchards contains the bulk of the businesses of the community.Otis Orchards-East Farms is north of the Spokane River from&nbsp;Liberty Lake, Washington&nbsp;and west of&nbsp;Rathdrum, Idaho&nbsp;and Stateline, Idaho. Newman Lake, which took its name from early settler William Newman, is 17 miles (27&nbsp;km) east-northeast of downtown&nbsp;Spokane. Newman Lake has a&nbsp;post office&nbsp;with&nbsp;ZIP code&nbsp;99025.&nbsp;It is also home to&nbsp;Ellerport Airport, a private-use airport. As of the summer of 2014, freshwater jellyfish inhabited the lake.The area was settled in the 1880s and served by the&nbsp;Northern Pacific Railway, which later ran excursion trains from Spokane. The local post office was renamed from Moab to Newman Lake in the 1930s.

The community included the Cushing &amp; Bryant general store, a blacksmith shop, a public school with approximately 60 students, a Methodist Episcopal church, and a Sunday school. At the time the post office was located in the Cushing &amp; Bryant store.Mead is home to the&nbsp;computer game&nbsp;development firm,&nbsp;Cyan Worlds, makers of&nbsp;Myst&nbsp;and&nbsp;Riven. Colbert is an&nbsp;unincorporated community&nbsp;in&nbsp;Spokane County,&nbsp;Washington, United States. The town is on&nbsp;U.S. Route 2, north of the city of&nbsp;Spokane.Children who live in Colbert attend either Colbert Elementary School on Greenbluff Road or&nbsp;Midway Elementary School, both of which, along with Shiloh Hills Elementary and Meadow Ridge Elementary, feed into the newly formed&nbsp;Mountainside Middle School&nbsp;(previously Mead Middle School), which feeds into&nbsp;Mount Spokane High School. These schools are part of the Mead School District.Colbert Elementary School has about 600 students enrolled, with 25 classroom teachers, 11 specialists, and 26 support staff.Additionally, the K-12 private school Northwest Christian is located in Colbert.

Riverside was first settled in the 1880s by Uriah Ward. When steamboats began traveling up the&nbsp;Okanogan River, Riverside was the upstream limit of navigation during the high water season.&nbsp;Riverside was officially incorporated on December 22, 1913. Riverside is one of the few locations in the world where the mineral&nbsp;thulite&nbsp;is found, the others being&nbsp;Mitchell County, North Carolina;&nbsp;Snillfjord, Norway; and the&nbsp;Otago&nbsp;region of&nbsp;New Zealand.

North of&nbsp;Spokane, the city of Deer Park was officially incorporated 113&nbsp;years ago on June 24, 1908. Deer Park got its name when railroad surveyors saw deer grazing in the area. It was settled in 1889 when a&nbsp;railroad siding&nbsp;was built for the&nbsp;Spokane Falls &amp; Northern Railway. Soon the Standard Lumber Company sawmill was established by William Short and George Crawford to provide the lumber needed to rebuild the nearby city of Spokane Falls (later renamed&nbsp;Spokane) following the great fire of 1889. By 1900 the population of Deer Park was approximately 300 residents. In addition to the sawmill, the community consisted of three general stores (owned separately by P. Kelly, Dan Weis, and A. Baldwin), a blacksmith and harness shop, a&nbsp;livery&nbsp;and feed stable, Jeff Moore's hotel, Dr. Prince's drug store, a public school with approximately 75 students, and a&nbsp;Congregational church&nbsp;led by Rev. F. McConaughy. By this time there were as many as eight sawmills within ten miles of Deer Park, all of which got their supplies in, and employed residents of, the town.Arcadia Apple Orchards Company was established around 1906, and orchards of apple trees were planted on the land surrounding Deer Park which had been cleared by the logging activity.The municipal airport east of the city was built during&nbsp;World War II&nbsp;and dedicated 77&nbsp;years ago in August 1944 with three paved runways, all at 6,100 feet (1,860&nbsp;m) in length. During the early 1960s,&nbsp;an&nbsp;Atlas&nbsp;missile site (567-1) near the airport was operated by the&nbsp;567th Strategic Missile Squadron&nbsp;of&nbsp;Fairchild AFB. Soon obsolete, the site was decommissioned in 1965 and sold for salvage in 1967.

Newport was given its name in 1890 because it was selected as a landing site for the first steamboat on the&nbsp;Pend Oreille River.&nbsp;Newport was officially incorporated on April 13, 1903.&nbsp;The first river bridge was built in 1906, and was replaced in 1926,&nbsp;and again in 1988.Newport, Washington seen in a real photo postcard mailed on October 7, 1913On July 14, 2015,&nbsp;an explosion&nbsp;took place at&nbsp;Zodiac Aerospace.&nbsp;Five people were injured,&nbsp;and people were urged to stay at least 2000 feet from the facility.One of the most important historic buildings is "Kelly's Bar and Grill" which has been operating since 1894 with only minor breaks, making it the second oldest bar in the state.

The name of the town comes from a&nbsp;Kalispel&nbsp;word,&nbsp;s??ewíle?, meaning 'watersnake' or 'gartersnake'. Alice Sherwood Abrahamson&nbsp;stated that "The name Chewelah comes from the Native American word "S che wee leh", meaning water or garter snake. There was a spring in what is now the southwest end of Chewelah. The old McCreas lived there, and their homestead was called "Sche wee leh ee" for the spring bubbled up there. The motion of the water gave the illusion of snakes moving about in the water." Prior to colonization by European-Americans, Chewelah was home to a&nbsp;band&nbsp;of the&nbsp;Kalispel people. The band was known as the slet?éw?si, meaning "valley people". Originally, the area was called Fool's Prairie, after the Kalispel Indian who left his own tribe because of a dispute. Chewelah and the rest of the&nbsp;Colville River Valley&nbsp;were part of the&nbsp;Colville Indian Reservation&nbsp;from April 9, 1872, when the reservation was created, until July 2, 1872, when a subsequent executive order reduced the size of the reservation. The Chewelah Band of Indians is currently part of the&nbsp;Spokane Tribe.Thomas and Mary Brown moved to the Fool's Prairie in 1859. On May 8, 1872, Thomas Brown received authority to establish a post office named Chewelah. The name was first used in Stevens County Commissioner Journals on May 6, 1872.&nbsp;That post office disbanded on February 23, 1875. In 1879, the post office was reestablished with Major John Simms, Indian Agent, as postmaster.&nbsp;Chewelah was officially incorporated on January 26, 1903.

Loon Lake&nbsp;is an&nbsp;unincorporated community&nbsp;and&nbsp;census-designated place&nbsp;in&nbsp;Stevens County,&nbsp;Washington, United States. Loon Lake is located on the northern shore of&nbsp;Loon Lake&nbsp;5 miles (8.0&nbsp;km) east of&nbsp;Springdale. The community is served by&nbsp;U.S. Route 395&nbsp;and&nbsp;Washington State Route 292. Loon Lake has a&nbsp;post office&nbsp;with&nbsp;ZIP code&nbsp;99148.

Springdale was originally called Squire City. The present site of Springdale was a wilderness until about 1886, when Mr. John Shriner and Mr. Charles O. Squire arrived at about the same time. Squire erected the first sawmill in 1887.&nbsp;Once Mr. Squire finalized his homestead, he platted the area on 29 November 1889, which he called Squire City. He became the first postmaster in December 1889, while the town was still called Squire City.Mark P. Sheffer was the first merchant. He brought in material by horse-drawn freight wagons prior to the arrival on the railroad.In 1889, the Spokane Falls &amp; Northern Railroad (SF&amp;NRR) was completed to the area and the depot was called Springdale.&nbsp;Springdale was the lunch stop between Spokane and Northport on the SF&amp;NRR.&nbsp;By 1892, the community was named Springdale.Springdale was officially incorporated on February 9, 1903.The Springdale Reformer, started by Elmer Burrows, was published from 1907 to 1923.The entire business section of Springdale was destroyed by fire, 9 July 1908.

Nine Mile Falls is an unincorporated community in Spokane County, Washington and Stevens County, Washington, United States. The community straddles the Spokane River 9 mi as the crow flies from downtown Spokane, at the location of a former falls that has been the site of Nine Mile Dam since 1908. As the name suggests, the community is located nine miles northwest of Downtown Spokane along the Spokane River. That naming convention can also be seen in the nearby community of Seven Mile and the Spokane neighborhood of&nbsp;Five Mile Prairie. Unlike those two, however, Nine Mile Falls is not part of the contiguous built up urban and suburban area surrounding Spokane. Suburban sprawl comes within two miles of the community, but does not directly abut it, making Nine Mile Falls an&nbsp;exurb&nbsp;of Spokane.

Cheney is a city in&nbsp;Spokane County,&nbsp;Washington,&nbsp;United States. The full-time resident population was 10,590 as of&nbsp;2010 census.[6]&nbsp;Eastern Washington University&nbsp;is located in Cheney. When classes are in session at EWU, the city's population reaches approximately 17,600 people on a temporary basis. The City of Cheney is located in&nbsp;Spokane County&nbsp;and is home to 10,590 residents, according to the 2010 Census. Cheney is proud of its small town nature, which is enhanced by the diverse influence of Eastern Washington University, a public regional university with over 10,000 full-time students. The&nbsp;Seattle Seahawks&nbsp;of the&nbsp;National Football League&nbsp;have held the majority of their summer training camps at&nbsp;EWU, from 1976–1985, and again from 1997 through the 2006 training camp.Cheney developed into the city known today because of its strong ties to education, trail riding, and agriculture. This provided a strong economic base for the community and was the result of a much larger event that took place in the United States. In 1858, the last Native American defense occurred in Eastern Washington. Because isolated Eastern Washington was an area of this Native American unrest during the early part of the territorial period, it was not until the late 1860s and early 1870s that settlers made homes in the area. In the latter part of that decade, settlers attracted by plentiful water and timber and the promise of a railway line made their homes near a group of springs bubbling through a willow copse from the bank where the&nbsp;Burlington Northern&nbsp;depot now stands.

Founded in 1882 and&nbsp;platted&nbsp;in 1889, Reardan was named for Central Washington Railroad engineer C.F. Reardan.&nbsp;Reardan was incorporated on April 14, 1903.The town is home to the elementary/middle/high school serving the Reardan-Edwall School District, covering over 360 square miles (930&nbsp;km2) in Lincoln and Spokane counties. The slough north of town, known as Audubon Lake, is well known among birders as a busy stop on the&nbsp;Pacific Flyway&nbsp;and features public facilities for viewers. A&nbsp;Hutterite&nbsp;colony settled in the area in 1961.Mule Days has been celebrated on the first Saturday in June for over 50, featuring a Kiddie Parade, Main Parade, entertainment and games for kids at the park, three on three basketball in front of the high school, food and craft fair at the park, Community BBQ pork luncheon, Beer Garden, and Mule Days Dance.

Reardan

Davenport was first settled in 1880, and was named in 1882 for resident J.C. Davenport. The city was made the&nbsp;county seat&nbsp;of Lincoln County on December 15, 1896, after an election that had chosen Davenport over then-seat&nbsp;Sprague, which had been destroyed in a fire, and Harrington.Davenport was officially incorporated on June 9, 1890. Davenport gained early prominence in the north central part of the&nbsp;Columbia Basin&nbsp;of eastern Washington, with its citizens successfully lobbying to receive the&nbsp;Seattle Lake Shore &amp; Eastern Railway&nbsp;(SLS&amp;E) in 1889 in place of rival Wheatdale. The transcontinental&nbsp;Northern Pacific Railway&nbsp;(NP) established a subsidiary, the Central Washington Railroad (CW), to build a competing railroad line that reached Davenport in February 1889. A branch line of the&nbsp;Great Northern Railway&nbsp;(GN) was built to Davenport from Bluestem in the 1920s.Davenport is centrally located in the northern wheat belt of the Columbia Basin, where&nbsp;dryland wheat farming&nbsp;on the hills not washed away in the great&nbsp;Missoula Floods&nbsp;some 14,000 years ago, is critical to the agricultural economy of the region. Davenport Union Warehouse and Odessa Union Warehouse operate multiple&nbsp;elevators&nbsp;of varying age and design on the southern part of the city. A few of these structures date to the early days of the city. Davenport still serves as a central collection point for&nbsp;wheat, with most of it shipped out by truck or railcar. While most of the wheat goes to&nbsp;export, some of it does find its way to the&nbsp;ADM&nbsp;flour mills&nbsp;in&nbsp;Spokane&nbsp;and&nbsp;Cheney. Locally grown&nbsp;barley&nbsp;also finds its way to various west coast&nbsp;breweries&nbsp;and other users.Primary State Highway #2&nbsp;(a.k.a. "Sunset Highway") closely followed the CW railroad from Coulee City through Davenport to Spokane. The route is now known as&nbsp;U.S. Route 2, but does not follow the original Sunset Highway in many places.&nbsp;Primary State Highway #7&nbsp;also intersected with&nbsp;PSH #2&nbsp;in Davenport, and is now part of&nbsp;State Route 28.&nbsp;PSH #22&nbsp;ran north from Davenport to the Canada–US border near Northport. This is&nbsp;State Route 25&nbsp;now.

Airway Heights was founded in 1942 and officially incorporated on June 28, 1955.Growth in the City was spurred by the opening of the&nbsp;Airway Heights Corrections Center&nbsp;by the Washington State Department of Corrections in 1992 and the opening of the&nbsp;Northern Quest Resort &amp; Casino&nbsp;by the&nbsp;Kalispel Indian Tribe&nbsp;in 2000. More recently, with the addition of a new&nbsp;Wal-Mart Supercenter, several new apartment buildings and housing developments, the expansion of the Northern Quest Casino, and the opening of the Spokane Tribe Casino, Airway Heights is continuing to grow. Also, the Spokane County Raceway Park is located in Airway Heights, and features major automobile events, including drag racing, stock car racing, and occasional monster truck shows.

The city of Medical Lake was incorporated in 1890.&nbsp;The city took its name from the nearby eponymous lake.The&nbsp;Spokane people, a Native American tribe which had long inhabited the area, believed the water and mud of the lake to possess curative properties.White settlers such as Andrew Lefevre and Stanley Hallett, who moved to the area in the 1870s, promoted this belief and marketed the lake salts for medicinal uses. A salt and soap industry developed here, followed by the construction of commercial bath houses in the 1880s. This was a period when springs and spas were popular developments across the country.Several resort hotels were constructed along the lake shore. In 1891, the state constructed&nbsp;Eastern State Hospital, and this further stimulated economic growth in the city. Such growth continued until the 1920s, when the lake declined in popularity as a tourist destination.A period of stagnation was interrupted in the 1940s with the construction of nearby&nbsp;Fairchild Air Force Base&nbsp;to support the US effort in World War II. This brought a surge of population to the city. Medical Lake's economy continues to depend upon the institutional presence of Eastern State Hospital and Fairchild AFB. Many residents of the city commute to work in nearby&nbsp;Spokane, which has a more varied economy.
